DOC and VOC

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a group of carbon-based chemicals that easily evaporate into the air at room temperature. They are commonly found in many everyday products such as paints, cleaning supplies, adhesives, air fresheners, and fuels. Because they vaporize quickly, VOCs can significantly affect indoor and outdoor air quality. Some common examples include benzene, formaldehyde, and toluene.

VOCs are important because of their impact on human health. Short-term exposure can cause symptoms like headaches, dizziness, eye and throat irritation, and breathing problems. Long-term exposure to certain VOCs may lead to more serious health issues, including damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Some VOCs are also known to be carcinogenic, meaning they can increase the risk of cancer.

In addition to health concerns, VOCs play a role in environmental pollution. When released into the atmosphere, they react with nitrogen oxides in the presence of sunlight to form ground-level ozone, a major component of smog. This contributes to air pollution, which can harm ecosystems, reduce visibility, and negatively affect climate conditions.

To reduce exposure to VOCs, it is recommended to use low-VOC or VOC-free products, ensure proper ventilation in indoor spaces, and store chemicals safely. Regular maintenance of equipment and minimizing the use of harmful substances can also help lower VOC emissions, creating a healthier and safer environment.
